Positions 2020

Montessori Classroom Assistant: Job Duties and Requirements

*There are two positions available. One in the toddler room and one in the Early Childhood Classroom.

Essential Information

Montessori classroom assistants work in a unique educational setting, with a child-initiated learning process and non-competitive activities. A high school diploma and proficiency in English are required for these positions. Applicants who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Montessori method by completing one or more Montessori teacher training courses or teaching assistant workshops will increase their job opportunities. State requirements set by DHS are implemented, but there are health and safety courses included during orientation.

Requirements for the classroom assistant position include a minimum of a high school diploma (or the equivalent) and proficiency in English. The prospective assistant may choose to specialize in childcare at one of two levels: infancy (birth to three years of age), or primary (3-6 years of age). Experience with the relevant age group is desired. Previous childcare work experience preferred. Nonsmokers only as the health of the children is priority and non-negotiable. Must be able to pass a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) background check.

Job Duties

The hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 1 pm. We are closed weekends and holidays. We follow the City of Maryville schools’ calendar but do have camp during the breaks so applicants will need to work. We are also open during the summer for camp and applicants will work then. The classroom assistants work cohesively with the lead teachers. The job duties range from organizing materials and cleaning the workspace to facilitating the learning process for each child. All assistants are expected to support the Montessori teaching method. Specifically, they must help guide the child through self-directed activities, allowing the child to develop at his or her own pace. They are expected to foster, along with the lead teachers, a nurturing and stimulating non-competitive environment.

Montessori classroom assistants may help a lead teacher in a variety of ways, including organizing the classroom, helping with assessments and generally helping to facilitate the Montessori teaching method in the classroom. A high school diploma is required, plus an understanding of the Montessori method. Montessori offers training programs for teachers and teacher assistants.
